Fantasy Studs & Duds Week 18

All rankings based on 9 categories (pts/reb/ast/stl/blk/3/fg%/ft%/to) and head-to-head format.

STUDS

Point Guards

  • Randy Foye, LAC, 4 games: Eric Gordon still isn’t back yet, so Randy Foye is still doin’ his thing.  He scored 21 a game with over three triples per on 47 percent last week, and he was doing more than just scoring.  Randy dished 5.5 dimes a game and gave you four steals on the week.
  • Jrue Holiday, PHI, 3 games: The Damaja did work in eight categories for you.  He averaged 15/3/7.3 with over a three/steal/block on 51% FG and perfect freethrowing.  No standout digits in any one category, but pretty solid production across eight.
  • Will Bynum, DET, 4 games: Little Will has taken advantage of the opportunity presented to him in Detroit.  He’s playing plenty of minutes because he’s one of the few guys on the Pistons’ roster who still gets along with the coach.  He got over 20 minutes in three of his four games, averaged 27 MPG, and put up 17.5/5.5 with a three and 1.5 steals.  He padded his averages in a 48-minute showing, but he could be a decent add if you need a cheap PG.

Shooting Guards

  • Kevin Martin, HOU, 4 games: 27/5/2 on 52% FG/93% FT (40 total attempts) with two swipes and 2.5 steals was good enough to earn Kev Mart the #2 spot in the week 18 rankings, and a spot on the studs list, of course.
  • JR Smith, DEN, 3 games: JR wasn’t great, but he’s relevant again, so I’m giving him a shout-out.  It appears that Smith will be seeing more minutes (and shots) with Melo out of the picture, so get him back in your lineup if you need some threes.  He connected on 2.3 long-balls per game last week on his way to 15 PPG.  Seven boards a night was a nice bonus.
  • James Harden, OKC, 4 games: James is going to be asked to do more scoring now that Jeff Green has been shipped off to Boston, and do more scoring he did in week 18.  Harden was good for 16 PPG with a couple three-balls, and should certainly be added if he’s still available in your league.

Small Forwards

  • Grant Hill, PHX, 3 games: Grant may be one of the oldest players in the league, but he’s still capable of putting up numbers that made him the 20th best player in fantasy basketball.  He averaged 16/5/4 with a block and a three on great percentages from the floor and the stripe.  I keep thinking he’s going to flame out one of these days… but that day certainly hasn’t come yet.
  • Chase Budinger, HOU, 4 games: Look for Air Bud to produce more now that Shane Battier has been sent back to Memphis.  Don’t necessarilly look for him to do 19/5 on 50% FG every week… but he could be worth an add if you’ve got a spot.
  • Andrei Kirilenko, UTA, 3 games: AK couldn’t hit from the stripe, but with a line like this his owners probably didn’t care: 17/5/5 with over a steal and a block on 63.5 percent from the field.

Power Forwards

  • Al Jefferson, UTA, 3 games: Big Al got the number one spot in the rankings with a super-efficient 26.7/8.7.  He shot 61.4 percent from the field (on 19 shots a game), 83.3 percent from the stripe, and turned the ball over under once a game.  He swatted over two shots a night and threw in a steal for good measure.
  • Kevin Garnett, BOS, 3 games: KG’s numbers were looking prime last week… 18/12/4 on 52% FG with over a steal and a block.  Okay, maybe those aren’t Minnesota numbers, but they’re at least ’07 Boston numbers.
  • Kevin Love, MIN, 4 games: 21/16/3.5 with over a steal and a three on nice percentages… doin’ what he do.  He gave Golden State his fourth 30/20 of the season on Sunday night.  The rest of the league has done 30/20 once (Paul Gasol).

Centers

  • Dwight Howard, ORL, 3 games: Dwight was the third best player in fantasy basketball even with the 67.6 percent freethrowing.  That’s because he put up 30/14 with three blocks and two steals.  My man has been a complete monster lately.
  • Greg Monroe, DET, 4 games: The young rookie did 17/12 on 59 percent shooting as he got big minutes in the absense of Ben Wallets.  Even when Wallats comes back I expect Monroe to get the majority of the minutes, so keep an eye on him.
  • Channing Frye, PHX, 3 games: Channing hasn’t been able to miss from downtown lately.  He knocked down 3.3 triples a game last week, which led to an average of 16.7 PPG.  He also gave you six boards for kicks.

DUDS

Point Guards

  • Steve Nash, PHX, 3 games: 11.3 assists per game is cool… but 10 points on 34 percent shooting with over three turnovers and under a three a game… isn’t.
  • Raymond Felton, DEN, 2 games: It’s looking like Ray won’t be doing anything close to his New York digits out in Denver.  He played 31 MPG but was only able to put up 5.5 points and six assists a night on 25 percent from the floor.  He’ll do better than that, obviously, but with Ty Lawson in the equation it’s looking like he’s going to fall off hard.
  • Louis Williams, PHI, 3 games: Lou has been pretty nice over the past couple months, but he had a very quiet week.  He played just 20 minutes a game and averaged exactly 10 PPG on 35 percent.  He didn’t really contribute anything other than a few threes.

Shooting Guards

  • Joe Johnson, ATL, 4 games: 15/4/3.5 isn’t terrible, but it damn sure isn’t what you hope for from one of your all-stars.  He didn’t even knock down a three per game, either.  Quiet week from JJ.
  • Gilbert Arenas, ORL, 3 games: This dude had his best game in months… and still finished the week with averages of nine points and three assists on 35 percent from the field.
  • OJ Mayo, MEM, 4 games: OJ Mayo……. probably wishes that trade to Indiana went through.  He remains glued to the pine (23 MPG) in Tennessee, so expect more 10 PPG, sub-40% FG type lines.  At least he threw in some threes and steals last week.

Small Forwards

  • Rashard Lewis, WAS, 4 games: Rashard put up an expensive 5/3 on crappy percentages in 21 MPG.  I mean expensive in two ways…  he cost your fantasy team with his 33% FG and 50% FT, and I don’t even dare to calculate how much he cost the Wizards while doing it.
  • Vince Carter, PHX, 3 games: Aside from a half-decent showing in Toronto, Wince was a complete non-factor.  Half Man Half Retired failed to score in double figures in two of his three games, resulting in a weak-sauce 10 PPG average on 38 percent.
  • Michael Beasley, MIN, 4 games: Super Cool put up the emptiest 17/5 that I’ve seen in a while.  He shot 42.5 percent from the field… meh.  He hardly took any freethrows, so his 71.4 percent from the stripe didn’t really matter.  He was under a three, under a steal, under a block, under two assists, and turned the ball over 3.3 times a game (in a four game week, mind you).  Super Cool Whack Stats.

Power Forwards

  • Lamar Odom, LAL, 4 games: Aside from a 20/20 game on the first night of February, Mr. Khloe had a pretty forgettable month.  He’s currently riding a streak of six weak games in a row, and he averaged just 10/6 last week.
  • Al Harrington, DEN, 3 games: Melo’s long gone and this dude still can’t get on the damn court.  He played just 18 MPG last week, almost seven minutes fewer than his season average.  That’s all you need to know.
  • Chris Andersen, DEN, 3 games: Another Denver big that can’t get on the floor.  He played even less than Harrington (13 MPG), which obviously didn’t allow him to do much of anything.

Centers

  • Javale McGee, WAS, 4 games: Where’d the swats go?  Under a block a game?  Oh, and he shot 20 percent from the line.  Those two things pretty much negate his 9.8 RPG.
  • DeMarcus Cousins, SAC, 4 games: DeMarcus shot poorly from the field and the line and turned the ball over a ton (16 times on the week).  Eleven points and seven boards doesn’t really make up for that… at all.  Rookie wall.
  • Ryan Anderson, ORL, 3 games: I know he’s a PF, but he qualifies at C, and PF was full.  Ryan couldn’t throw a stone in the ocean last week.  He went 25 percent from the field as he nearly eeked out six PPG… at least 1 of his 1.7 buckets per game were from beyond the arc.
