Fantasy Studs & Duds Week 15

All rankings based on 9 categories (pts/reb/ast/stl/blk/3/fg%/ft%/to) and head-to-head format.

STUDS

Point Guards

  • Jason Kidd, DAL, 4 games: He still can’t find the range on his jumper (37% FG), but his all-around contributions were more than solid.  Kidd gave you 10 points, five boards, nine assists, a steal, a block, and nearly three threes a game.  You’ll live with a slack field goal percentage if he’s going to do numbers like this.
  • Baron Davis, LAC, 4 games: One of Blake Griffin’s biggest contributions to the Clippers is probably what he’s done to Baron Davis.  The veteran PG is actually playing with some passion again, and it shows in his numbers.  He gave you 16/7 with over a three and 2.5 steals per game last week.
  • Mike Conley, MEM, 4 games: Conley’s line was similar to Kidd’s.  He wasn’t hitting the shots (38.2% FG), but he put up nice numbers across the board.  Memphis’ expensive PG was good for 15/3/8 with two steals and two threes per game.

Shooting Guards

  • Kevin Martin, HOU, 3 games: Kevin likely won you the freethrow category with his 97 percent shooting on 11 attempts a game.  His 27.7 points, 1.7 steals, and three triples per game filled out the fourth best line in fantasy basketball.
  • Kobe Bryant, LAL, 3 games: It required almost 22 shots a game, but Bryant managed 26.7 PPG to go along with 8/8.7 in the assists and rebounds categories.  A near-triple-double line makes the shaky shooting completely forgivable.
  • Dwyane Wade, MIA, 4 games: Dwyane gave his owners that fantasy gold with 1.3s in the threes, steals, and blocks categories.  Throw in 24.5/8/6 and some 50 percent shooting and you’ve got the…….23rd best line of the week?  What?  I guess the 76 percent freethrowing and 3.3 TOs per kinda f@cked his ranking.

Small Forwards

  • Dorell Wright, GSW, 2 games: I normally avoid players who had two-game weeks, but my main man gets an exception here because he still did totals of seven threes and four swipes.  He could do those same numbers in a four-game week and put up solid averages.  Speaking of averages, his line was 18/5/4.
  • Josh Smith, ATL, 3 games: Smith contributed across the board with averages of 19 points, 11 boards, just under four assists, 1.3 steals, and 2.5 blocks.  He shot 54 percent from the field, and even made 75 percent of his freethrows… nice little bonus.
  • Richard Jefferson, SAS, 3 games: RJ was back in early-season form with averages of 14.7 points and 2.7 threes a game.  He was dialed in from the field (63% FG), and threw in a block a game for good measure.

Power Forwards

  • Elton Brand, PHI, 3 games: Two of Elton’s three games were against the Knicks, so I suppose it should come as no surprise that he was the best player in fantasy basketball.  He put up 25/10 with over a steal and two blocks a night while connecting on 60 percent of his shots and 89 percent of his freethrows.
  • Dirk Nowitzki, DAL, 4 games: Dirk finished two spots below Elton Brand with some 60 percent shooting of his own.  He shot well from the line too–97 percent on 11 attempts per game–and tripled six times on the week.  His 26.8 PPG were above his average, and 1.5 swats a game was a pleasent surprise.
  • Amir Johnson, TOR, 3 games: Amir was the fifth best player in fantasy basketball.  No, that’s not a typo.  Amir is FINALLY getting minutes, and it looks like he’s FINALLY going to give us the production we expected.  The line: 19/11 with two steals and 1.5 swats… on 68.6 percent shooting.

Centers

  • Pau Gasol, LAL, 3 games: 26/11 with 1.7 BPG… sixth best line in fantasy basketball… I had to squeeze the guy in somewhere.  Pau couldn’t miss from anywhere on the floor… he shot 66 percent from the field and 90 percent from the stripe.
  • LaMarcus Aldridge, POR, 4 games: I had to throw him in with the centers because the PF position was loaded.  The way he was swatting shots he may as well have been playing the five anyway.  Aldridge blocked eight shots on the week, which is rather odd when you consider that he only blocked 10 over the entire month of January.  In addition to the swats, Aldridge provided his usual scoring punch with 23 PPG, as well as a solid 10 RPG.
  • Chuck Hayes, HOU, 3 games: All aboard the Chuckwagon!  It carried a fair amount of weight last week with averages of 12 points, nine boards, 2.3 dimes, 1.3 steals, and 1.3 blocks.  Throw in some 60 percent shooting and you’ve got the 71st best line of the week.  That may not sound like much, but this is Chuck Hayes we’re talking about here.  You can probably find the guy on the free agent wire.

DUDS

Point Guards

  • Steve Nash, PHX, 2 games: Ah f@ck, Steve only plays twice this week.  Well, at least I’ll have a chance at TOs.  Hah, so much for that… Nash coughed it up 14 times in just two games!  The line: 10.5/10.5 with 1.5/1.5 in threes/steals.
  • Gilbert Arenas, ORL, 4 games: He’s still getting opportunities, but he’s still playing like crap.  Nine shots a game isn’t a ton, but if you’re only going to make 2.8 of ‘em the coach probably isn’t going to be inclined to find more looks for you.  Agent Has Been compounded poor shooting from the floor with some 54.5 percent freethrow clankery on his way to a disappointing 7.5 PPG.
  • Jrue Holiday, PHI, 3 games: Even with two games against the Knicks, Jrue struggled.  He shot under 30 percent from the floor and managed just six PPG.  At least he gave you five boards and six assists to avoid being completely useless.

Shooting Guards

  • JR Smith, DEN, 4 games: Two total threes?  In a four game week?  In over 24 minutes a game?  The guy is 4-28 from long range since going 8-14 on January 13th.  I think it’s fair to say he’s in a bit of a slump.
  • Wes Johnson, MIN, 3 games: The rookie managed to get himself 11 shots a game… he just didn’t make many of ‘em.  His 30 percent shooting led to a meager eight PPG, and aside from a three and a steal per game, he didn’t do anything.

Small Forwards

  • Hedo Turkoglu, ORL, 4 games: Hedo finished off the week with a 1-10 stinker in Boston, and his other three games weren’t much better.  His 28 percent shooting is the only thing that really hurt, but he didn’t produce anything that helped, either.
  • Shane Battier, HOU, 3 games: Three games, 33 minute per… what happened?  Well, he couldn’t hit the shots.  Battier went just 6 of 20 from the floor and was only able to connect on 3 of 12 long balls.  He contributed a couple blocks per game, which is nice, but that shooting simply leaves a lot to be desired.

Power Forwards

  • David Lee, GSW, 2 games: Dave was already at a disadvantage due to Golden State’s two-game week.  Averages of 14 PPG and 5.5 RPG didn’t really help his cause.
  • Chris Bosh, MIA, 4 games: 13/6 on 38.8 percent?  Nah, you’re gonna have to do better than that, Chris.  A block and a steal is cool, but you’re an All-Star, so I’m looking for All-Star numbers.
  • Tim Duncan, SAS, 3 games: Timmy played just 25 minutes a game and took just 10 shots per… not really enough to make significant fantasy contributions.  He scored just 11.7 PPG, and his boards were a little slack as well at 6.7.

Centers

  • Brook Lopez, NJN, 4 games: I just don’t get it… how can a guy be seven feet tall, play starters minutes, and not stumble upon more than 4.3 boards a night?  This could very well be the worst case of the Bargnani Flu ever documented.  Even the guy the flu is named after grabbed five boards a game last week.
  • Al Harrington, DEN, 3 games: I feel like a damn idiot for making a preseason trade to acquire this guy for Luol Deng.  I did it because I needed some threes… and now I’m stuck watching this guy go 2-12 while Luol hits two triples a night.  FAIL.
  • Javale McGee, WAS, 4 games: Curious George spent most of the week exploring the bench.  He played more than 20 minutes just once, and even in that game he didn’t do much.  He finished with averages of six points, three boards, and a block.
