Fantasy Studs & Duds Week 14

All rankings based on 9 categories (pts/reb/ast/stl/blk/3/fg%/ft%/to) and head-to-head format.

STUDS

Point Guards

  • Chris Paul, NOH, 4 games: 22/3.5/11 doesn’t look all that special, even on 55/93 percentages with 1.5 threes a game… but he was the third ranked player on the week and he played four games, so I figured I had to give him a spot.
  • Steve Nash, PHX, 4 games: Steve gave you 16.8 points, 12.3 dimes, and a couple threes a night on 50 percent from the field and 90 percent from the line.  He turned the ball over almost four times a game, but if you own Steve Nash you likely don’t care.
  • Randy Foye, LAC, 3 games: Foye has benefitted from the absense of Eric Gordon, and will continue to get starters minutes for another few weeks.  Last week he averaged 19 PPG with almost three triples and two steals.  I don’t think it’s unrealistic to expect similar production as long as Gordon is out of the lineup.

Shooting Guards

  • Andre Iguodala, PHI, 4 games: He’s had a down year, but last week he gave owners the all-around production that has made him a hot fantasy commodity over the years.  His 15/4.5/6 is just solid, but when you tack on a three and nearly three swipes per game you’ve got the week’s sixth best line.  He shot well from both the floor (56%) and the line (90%) as well.
  • Manu Ginobili, SAS, 3 games: Manu’s been quieter lately than he was at the start of the season, but he was big in his last three games.  Gino put up a line of 22.7/3.7/6 on 54 percent from the floor with three threes and 1.7 steals.  Anything but quiet.
  • Mike Dunleavy, IND, 3 games: Dunny Jr. bopped 3.3 triples a night on his way to nearly 18 PPG.  He shot a blazing 62.5 percent from the floor and gave you four boards and a steal for good measure.

Small Forwards

  • Kevin Durant, OKC, 4 games: 35.5 points and 10.8 boards per game.  ‘Nuff said.
  • LeBron James, MIA, 3 games: LeBron both swatted and swiped over twice a game, which is sweet music to any fantasy owners ears.  He also contributed 28.7 PPG, 7.7 RPG, and nine APG.  Not too shabby.
  • Thaddeus Young, PHI, 3 games: Thad had a decent stretch earlier this season where I actually picked him out of the free agent pool, but then he fizzled just after I had conveniently used him as a trading chip.  He had another decent three-game stretch last week with 16/5 and two steals on 67 percent from the floor.  I wouldn’t think much of it…  if you have a free spot and want to add the guy, go for it, but don’t drop anyone any good.

Power Forwards

  • Kevin Love, MIN, 4 games: For what seems like the 14th time, Love was the best player in fantasy basketball.  He gave you 24.5 points, 16.3 boards, three assists, 1.5 threes, 55 percent shooting, 90 percent from the line… I should’ve just listed what he didn’t give you: nothing.  That wouldn’t have taken so long.
  • Ryan Anderson, ORL, 4 games: This is, what, the third week in a row that Ryan’s made this list?  I’d say he’s legit.  I saw Brandon Bass go down with what looked like an ankle injury tonight.  I’m not sure if it’s serious, but if so, then Ryan will likely be even better.  Anderson did 17/7 with almost four triples a night.
  • Amir Johnson, TOR, 4 games: Now here’s a guy who I thought for sure would have a great season.  I drafted him in a few leagues and tried to get him in the others.  Good thing I failed to snatch him a few times, because he hasn’t been much good.  Last week, however, he gave owners what I thought he be his usual numbers: 15 points, 7 boards, and 1.5 swats a game.  Thanks for showing up, Amir… you’re only three months late.

Centers

  • Dwight Howard, ORL, 4 games: Had Dwight been able to make a freethrow I imagine he’d have been the #1 player on the week.  He was a MONSTER with a line of 24.8/16.8/2 STL/2.8 BLK.  I would’ve been thrilled had the rest of my team not been half dead.  Good ol’ ifs…
  • Andrew Bogut, MIL, 4 games: He couldn’t hit a freethrow either, but with a 14/14/4 block line… who the hell’s gonna complain about a few bricks from the stripe?  Complain about anything in front of a fellow fantasy owner with a line like that and you’ll be lucky not to take a brick to your face.
  • Marcin Gortat, PHX, 4 games: I told you he’d produce for the Suns!  The Big Pole gave you 15.5/9.3 with over a swat a game on 67 percent from the field.  He padded his numbers a bit with a 25/11 game, but he had a good week overall.

DUDS

Point Guards

  • Rajon Rondo, BOS, 4 games: Two steals a night is cool, but believe it or not, nine APG is pretty slack for Rajon.  aside from the swipes and dishes he didn’t really contribute anything, and he turned the ball over way too much at over four a game.
  • Monta Ellis, GSW, 4 games: 18.5 PPG is cool for a lot of players, but coming from The Moped it’s sorely disappointing… especially on 35 percent shooting.  He gave you a lot of steals, but that’s about it.
  • Aaron Brooks, HOU, 4 games: He’s lost his starting job to Kyle Lowry, and he’s not playing well off the bench.  Aaron shot just 30 percent in under 25 minutes a night.  Looks like injuries ruined Brooks’ season.

Shooting Guards

  • Jason Richardson, ORL, 4 games: J-Rich is slumping.  He had another lowsy shooting week at 30 percent, and didn’t find other ways to put the ball in the hoop (just 11 PPG).  At least half the buckets he did make were threes.
  • JR Smith, DEN, 3 games: He’s made two threes since the 15th of January.  I think we all know JR’s virtually useless to fantasy owners if he isn’t knocking down triples.
  • Mike Miller, MIA, 3 games: He had his breakout game, but now he’s struggling again.  Mike shot under 29 percent and failed to hit a three a game.

Small Forwards

  • Ron Artest, LAL, 3 games: How lame has this clown been this season?  Five points, two boards, and one steal per game on 21 percent shooting is what he produced last week.  At this point I hope you’ve dropped the guy.  Artest can have this section all to himself, I don’t see any other SFs that really belong.

Power Forwards

  • Pau Gasol, LAL, 3 games: 13/8?  That’s alright if your name’s Marc, but those aren’t Pau numbers.  Step it up you f@cking pansy.
  • Al Harrington, DEN, 3 games: Al’s been letting me down all season.  He doesn’t play much, and last week was no different.  He missed a game due to injury, and in the three he played in he couldn’t hit anything (37% FG).
  • Jason Thompson, SAC, 4 games: JT had six good games in January… none of them were last week.  I couldn’t find anyone else to stick here.

Centers

  • Brook Lopez, NJN, 4 games: I don’t care that he actually had a pretty good week.  I’m seeing a 4.5 in the rebound column, and that’s sad.
  • Robin Lopez, PHX, 4 games: Let’s get both twins in the mix… why not?  Robin did almost as many boards as his brother (4) in like half the minutes, but gave you just 7.8 PPG and nothing else.
  • Roy Hibbert, IND, 3 games: This may be the final week of Roy’s slump.  Why?  If you haven’t heard, Jim O’Brien’s finally been canned.  He’s received a lot of the blame for Roy and the Pacers’ recent struggles, and now we’ll see just how accurate that criticism was.  I expect Hibbert’s minutes to go back up, and therefore his numbers should do the same.
