Fantasy Studs & Duds Week Eight

All rankings based on 9 categories (pts/reb/ast/stl/blk/3/fg%/ft%/to) and head-to-head format.

STUDS

Point Guards

  • Jose Calderon, TOR, 2 games: Jose played just two games last week, but he made them count.  Calderon averaged 17.5 points and 13 assists while shooting his usual high percentages (65.2% FG!).  He did record six turnovers in just two outings, which is an unusually high number for him.  Calderon also contributed in the threes (1.5) and steals (1) categories.
  • Ty Lawson, DEN, 3 games: Lawson took advantage of an injury to Mr. Brick Shot, and considering how well he performed, Denver may want to just leave Chauncey right on the bench.  Ty was the 12th best player in fantasy basketball with averages of 18 points, 7.3 assists, 1.3 steals, and a three.  He basically did what Chauncey hasn’t been able to do all season: make shots.  He went 52.6% from the floor on the week.  Don’t expect this production to continue, Brick Shot’s coming back soon.
  • Kyle Lowry, HOU, 4 games: Lowry’s been great lately in place of Aaron Brooks, but this past week is likely the last hoorah.  Brooks returned to action last night in Sacramento and will be back in the starting lineup very shortly.  Lowry was able to put up 14/9 on over 51% FG with almost three steals and over a three a game as the starter last week.

Shooting Guards

  • Ray Allen, BOS, 3 games: 2.3 steals and 2.3 threes per game is an awfully nice addition to the end of a statline.  Ray’s core stats were pretty good as well: 20/4/4 on 52%.  He wasn’t quite his usual self from the stripe (80%), but that’s still not too bad.
  • Reggie Williams, GSW, 3 games: Williams has been killing it ever since Steph Curry got hurt.  He started all week long and produced 20 PPG on 53.8% FG with three triples a night.  He threw in five boards for good measure…  more than solid from a guard.
  • Arron Afflalo, DEN, 3 games: Arron did 17.3 PPG while knocking down 2.7 threes a night on 57.6% FG.  He didn’t do much else (four boards, three assists), but you’ll certainly take that production from Afflalo.  If you have him in a typical 12 or 14 team league he’s probably one of your weaker players, yet he ranked 34th last week.  That’s pure WIN.

Small Forwards

  • Paul Pierce, BOS, 3 games: P2 had a pretty damn good week.  He knocked down a game winner in Madison Square Garden, dropped a triple double, and earned the #1 fantasy ranking.  His PTS/REB/AST–21.7/8.3/8.7–were exceptional, and he threw in some other goodies as well: 1.3 threes, 2.3 steals, 51.2% FG, 95% FT.
  • Tayshaun Prince, DET, 3 games: Prince had a 28/12/8 game on Sunday that made his line look excellent.  He put up 17/6/5 with almost two blocks a night on the week… but the majority of the production came from that one great game.  He shot 63.6% from the field, but also shot just 63.6% from the line.
  • Chris Douglas-Roberts, MIL, 3 games: CDR’s finally getting some minutes (over 30 a game last week), and he used the time to do what he does best: put the ball in the basket.  He averaged 16 PPG on 51.7% FG and 94% FT (on over five attempts per game).  The scoring was kind of empty, he hardly hit any threes, but still… it’s probably a lot more than you expected from the guy.

Power Forwards

  • Tim Duncan, SAS, 3 games: Timmy D’s numbers have been down this season as he’s taken a lesser role in the offense.  That wasn’t the story last week, though.  He averaged 18 PPG on 58.5% FG along with 12 boards and FOUR POINT SEVEN blocks.  Duncan basically carried squads in the swats category.
  • Dirk Nowitzki, DAL, 3 games: How about this for all-around production: 1.7 threes, 1.3 blocks, and 1.3 steals.  His core numbers were a little slack (23/6/3), but not too bad.  He shot 48% from the field and knocked down all 16 FTs he attempted.
  • Kevin Garnett, BOS, 3 games: KG was great in five categories and pretty good in a couple others.  He averaged a solid double-double (15/12) along with 2.7 assists and 2.7 steals.  He shot the ball well from both the floor and the line and didn’t turn the ball over much.

Centers

  • Kevin Love, MIN, 4 games: 24.5/16/3.5 with 1.5 threes, sixth ranked player, nothing out of the ordinary, moving right along…
  • Anderson Varejao, CLE, 3 games: Andy V was an absolute monster… he even made his freethrows (over 91% on four attempts per game).  The line: 15.7/12.7 on 56% FG with a steal and two blocks.  He put 14/17 on Amare and the Knicks in a rare Cavs win on Saturday.
  • Channing Frye, PHX, 3 games: He fired plenty of bricks, but he also knocked down 3.3 triples per game.  You’ll live with sub-40% shooting if the dude’s going to hit 10 threes on the week.  He also averaged 1.3 swats to go along with his 14/9.  Watch out for a decline in Frye’s minutes with the arrival of Marcin Gortat.

DUDS

Point Guards

  • Steve Nash, PHX, 3 games: 12/10 isn’t the worst thing ever, but 0.7 threes?  3.7 TOs?  Not a single steal?  I’ll pass on that.  Nash’s line kinda got screwed by his exit from a game just five minutes in after a collision with Tyson Chandler.
  • Darren Collison, IND, 4 games: Collison’s disappointing season rolls on.  He did 11.5 points and 3.5 assists without a single three and just two steals all week.
  • Louis Williams, PHI, 4 games: Lou’s minutes dried up, and so did his production.  He played just 20 MPG and put up 10/3/3 on 27% FG with little else.

Shooting Guards

  • Brandon Roy, POR, 2 games: Roy is simply not healthy.  He missed the last two games of the week, and in the two he did play in he wasn’t able to be effective.  He averaged just 5.5/3.5/5 on 24% shooting in 34 MPG before shutting it down.  Roy sat out again tonight and will be evaluated on Wednesday.
  • Stephen Jackson, CHA, 3 games: Stack didn’t rack up any of his usual stats.  He made under a three per game and only scored 10.7 PPG.  His 28 MPG and 31% shooting probably have a lot do do with the arm injury he suffered on Friday.  He didn’t miss any games because of it, but the poor numbers and low minutes suggest that he isn’t right.
  • Trevor Ariza, NOH, 4 games: Trevor got his 1.5 steals, but forced his owners to put up with 37% shooting and 2.8 TOs a night.  I guess if you own Ariza you probably plan for that, though.  Since leaving LA he certainly hasn’t been known for his efficiency.

Small Forwards

  • Thaddeus Young, PHI, 4 games: Thad struggled to get minutes early on, but had started to play and produce more over the past month or so.  Last week he played a reasonable amount (23 and a half minutes a night), but wasn’t able to do much.  He put up just 6/5 with 1.3 steals and nothing else.
  • Omri Casspi, SAC, 4 games: The Kings’ rotation continues to be one of the most inconsistent ones in the league.  Casspi played just 18 minutes per game, which obviously didn’t allow him to do much of anything.  I streamed the guy to try to get a few points on Sunday.  I needed five to win my matchup… he played like five minutes scored three.  Dear Paul Westphal/Omri Casspi, thanks for your help.
  • Corey Maggette, MIL, 3 games: Maggs is on the duds list because his teammate CDR, who’s on the studs list, took all his minutes.  Maggette averaged just SIX MPG last week.  His line had me rolling: 0.7 points on 9.1% shooting with 1.3 TOs per game.  How the hell do you average more turnovers than points?  Like this.  Drop the scrub.

Power Forwards

  • Al Jefferson, UTA, 3 games: He blocked 9 shots on the week, but he didn’t do much else.  14/7 on 39% isn’t really what you’re hoping to get from Big Al.  He wasn’t terrible, but it was a pretty good week for power forwards.
  • JJ Hickson, CLE, 3 games: Hickson continues to sit on the bench far too much to be worth owning.  He played just 17 MPG last week and put up a forgettable 8/3.
  • Ben Wallace, DET, 3 games: No one expects Big Ben to do any scoring, but 0.7 PPG on 16.7%?  At least he only took two shots a game, so the percentage didn’t really matter.  I would’ve cut Ben some slack if he had hit the boards hard, but he didn’t.  Wallace grabbed just 3.7 rebounds per game.

Centers

  • Nene, DEN, 3 games: Nene didn’t block a single shot all week.  He didn’t score or rebound much either (11.7/7).  His percentages were good, but when you aren’t shooting much it doesn’t really matter.
  • Samuel Dalembert, SAC, 4 games: DeMarcus Cousins played well enough to keep Sammy stapled to the bench.  Dalembert played just 13 minutes a night and averaged 3/3 with a block.  As long as DeMarcus keeps his head screwed on straight expect Dalembert to produce little to nothing.
  • DeJuan Blair, SAS, 3 games: DeJuan’s still starting, but he didn’t play nearly enough to do any numbers last week.  He averaged 5/2 with absolutely no goodies in 15 MPG.

Why is Kevin Love a center on here? Just to make the players fit?
