Fantasy Studs & Duds Week Seven

All rankings based on 9 categories (pts/reb/ast/stl/blk/3/fg%/ft%/to) and head-to-head format.

STUDS

Point Guards

  • George Hill, SAS, 3 games: Hill averaged under two assists a game… so what’s he doing here?  Well, he dropped 18.3 PPG, hit three triples a game, and executed the 1+ steal/block line.  He was the 20th ranked player on the week.  Pretty studly stuff right there.
  • Raymond Felton, NYK, 4 games: Felton finished the week with a 19-point/17-assist effort against the Denver Nuggets which helped propell his averages to 19.5/10.8 on the week.  He also recorded 2+ steals and threes per game.  Felton’s been a beast for weeks now, expect him to keep on keeping on.
  • Luke Ridnour, MIN, 4 games: Luke had his best four-game stretch of the season last week.  He averaged over 12 points and almost eight dimes on 56% shooting, and threw in 1+/1+ in the steals and threes categories.  If you own Luke Ridnour or have a chance to pick him up, don’t get too excited: Jonny Flynn is supposed to play next game.

Shooting Guards

  • Kevin Martin, HOU, 3 games: Kev Mart pretty much locked up the FT category for his owners: on the week he went 39-42 from the stripe (that’s about 93% on 14 attempts per game).  He shot well from the floor as well–50%–on his way to 28 PPG.  He knocked down 1.7 threes per game and only turned the ball over a total of three times.
  • Omri Casspi, SAC, 3 games: Omri’s minutes have fluctuated all season long, but last week he played about 29 a game and made the most of them.  Casspi averaged 17.7/6.3 on 51.3% FG with over two steals a game.  He was on fire from long distance, knocking down 2.7 triples a night.  Fransisco Garcia and Luther Head hardly played at all, which helped Casspi a great deal.  Unfortunately, the Kings rotation seems to change so often that I can’t really call Omri a great add at this point.  Take a risk on him if you have a roster spot… he’ll produce if they let him play.
  • Wesley Matthews, POR, 4 games: Wes continues to show why Portland paid him big bucks this past offseason.  He’s been great since mid-November, and this time around he put up the 14th best week in fantasy basketball: 19.3/2.5/2.5 with over two threes and steals on 47% FG and 90% FT.

Small Forwards

  • Wilson Chandler, NYK, 4 games: Will The Thrill was the fourth best player in fantasy basketball last week with the following line: 19.5/6.3/2.5 with 2.8 threes and 1.3 blocks on just under 59% shooting.  Wilson’s been great all year, much better than I expected.  I have him on my team and I’ve been extremely pleased, but I have a major concern.  If you own Wilson Chandler, keep an eye on this Carmelo Anthony situation.  If Melo ends up on the Knicks and Wilson isn’t part of the deal, his minutes and shots will certainly decrease.  If a Melo to NY deal that doesn’t involve Chandler picks up steam I’d suggest trying to sell high.
  • Mike Dunleavy, IND, 4 games: Dunleavy didn’t do anything mind-boggling in a single category, but across the board he produced very nicely: 12.8 points, 6.5 boards, 2.8 assists, a steal, 1.3 blocks, 2.3 threes, 54.3% FG…  that’s solid across seven categories.  His TOs were even pretty low at 1.5 per game, and his FT% wasn’t bad either (80%), although he hardly shot any.  Dunny Jr.’s actually stayed healthy and had a pretty solid season… so far.  I don’t trust the guy.
  • Dorell Wright, GSW, 3 games: My main man Dorell not only hit 3.3 threes per game, he averaged a double-double.  You’ll take 10 boards a game from your small forward, and 14 PPG isn’t too shabby either.  He shot under 35% from the floor, but he’s out there gunning crazy threes… so you’ve got to expect some bad FG weeks.  He threw in two steals and a block on top of all the other goodies as well.

Power Forwards

  • Kevin Love, MIN, 4 games: Kevin did what Kevin does.  What Kevin does is average 26.3 points and 17.3 boards per game.  Kevin not only took care of your scoring and your rebounding… he also made sure your threes were straight, hitting 10 of them on the week.  He did all of this while shooting 52.2% from the floor, making him the best player in fantasy basketball.
  • Dirk Nowitzki, DAL, 3 games: Dirk shot 70-freaking-percent from the floor… while hitting two threes a game.  That doesn’t even make sense.  The guy has been on fire all season long… his FG% is up to damn near 57% on the year.  I addition to the hot shooting, he did plenty of other nice stuff.  Over a block and a steal per game?  Yup.  26/9? Uh-huh.  What a beast.
  • DeJuan Blair, SAS, 3 games: Blair has started every game for the Spurs this season, but his minutes have been all over the place.  That wasn’t the case last week, though.  He played at least 21 minutes in all three of his games and cashed in to the tune of 13/10 on 58.3% shooting.  He also had eight steals on the week, which surprised me.  He actually averages 1.4 swipes per game on the season.  That’s damn good for a PF/C who plays limited minutes.  Anyway, don’t get too excited, I figure Blair just had a random week where he played a little more than usual.  He’ll return to his 7/7 self soon.

Centers

  • Andrew Bogut, MIL, 3 games: The Big Aussie swatted 4.3 shots a night while also doing 17.3/15.3… good enough to make him the 10th best player in fantasy basketball, even though he shot pretty poorly: 43.5% from the floor and 66.7% from the line.  He threw in three assists and a steal per game, which is nice from your center.
  • Amare Stoudemire, NYK, 4 games: The guy’s scored 30 eight games in a row… he’s gotta make the list.  33.5/9.3/3 with over two swats a night on 57.7% from the floor and 91.7% from the line (6th best line in the league).  He did turn the ball over almost five times a game, which sucks, but if he’s going to drop 30 a night you’ll gladly put up with that.
  • DeAndre Jordan, LAC, 3 games: 7/10 isn’t all that beastly, but I wanted to mention DeAndre because Chris Kaman is out at least three weeks.  Jordan will be starting at center for the Clippers while the Kaveman gets healed up… he’s a great source of cheap blocks and boards if you can deal with his 45% clankery from the line.  He swatted 1.8 shots a game last week.

DUDS

Point Guards

  • Jason Kidd, DAL, 3 games: If FG% is a category you care about, then J-Kidd is probably starting to get on your nerves a bit.  He shot just 22% last week, and he’s now sub-35 percent on the season.  Not only did he shoot poorly… he just didn’t really do much.  Eight assists, one three, and 2.3 steals was pretty much it.
  • Monta Ellis, GSW, 3 games: The Mississippi Bullet didn’t do nearly as much damage as his owners have become accustomed to.  He struggled with his shot (37.3% FG, 60% FT), and turned the ball over four times a game.  He scored just 19 PPG, five points fewer than his season average.
  • Tyreke Evans, SAC, 3 games: Tyreke had the worst week of his life.  He played 32 minutes a game, so these numbers are truly shocking: 10/2/3 on 26% shooting.  He’s been playing hurt for a while now and his numbers have been down because of that, but nothing like this.  He’s finally decided to sit out a few games, at least the next three.  Hopefully he returns as the Tyreke Evans of last season.

Shooting Guards

  • Jason Richardson, PHX, 3 games: J-Rich couldn’t hit a damn thing last week.  He shot 21% from the floor and went 0-12 from long distance.  ‘Nuff said.
  • Trevor Ariza, NOH, 3 games: Trevor was slightly better than J-Rich… he shot 25% and went 2-5 from distance.  The difference between Ariza and Richardson is that Ariza hasn’t been able to shoot since he left Los Angeles, and J-Rich has shot well this season for the most part.  Ariza made a mistake leaving the Lakers… he had a nice gig there.
  • OJ Mayo, MEM, 3 games: OJ desperately needs a new team.  He played just 21 minutes a game last week and only managed to fire eight shots a night.  That’s not nearly enough to produce much of anything, especially when your FG% is 37.5.  Mayo owners, the guy has no value at this point, so try to be patient and pray to the basketballs gods that he gets traded to the Knicks.

Small Forwards

  • Paul Pierce, BOS, 3 games: The Celtics won all their games last week, but you’d never guess that looking at P2′s line: 12/5/3 on 32% shooting without a single three.  At least he averaged over a steal and a block and made 88% of his FTs on 5.7 attempts per game.
  • Nicolas Batum, POR, 4 games: Batum had an 0-7 game that really ruined his line.  The 2-9 game didn’t help either.  He ended up averaging 8/4.5 on 36%.  He’s usually good for some steals and blocks, but there were damn near none of those last week.
  • Tayshaun Prince, DET, 4 games:  The big scoring numbers of the past couple weeks came to and end.  Tay scored just nine a game and didn’t hit a single three in four games… he didn’t get a single steal either.  Terrible fantasy week.

Power Forwards

  • Tim Duncan, SAS, 3 games: The Spurs are the hottest team in the league, but Timmy’s no longer the main man in the offense.  He scored just nine points a night last week.  The boards (7.3) and blocks (1) weren’t really there either… probably because he played just 24 MPG.
  • Carl Landry, SAC, 3 games: If you haven’t already, it’s probably time to drop this guy.  Jason Thompson’s taken the starting job as well as all the minutes.  Landry played about 20 MPG and was only able to muster 8/1.  That’s correct, ONE board per game.  Numbers like that certainly won’t help him get off the pine.
  • Charlie Villanueva, DET, 3 games: CV’s minutes are still down way too much for him to produce.  He played just 20 a night last week.  His line: 9/3 on 35% with about a three a game and nothing else.  I really wish Charlie would end up in a situation where he could start and play consistent minutes.  He’s a very versatile scorer who is a joy to watch.  Unfortunately he’s stuck in a logjam that involves a bunch of washed up veterans who really need to be dealt.

Centers

  • Andris Biedrins, GSW, 3 games: Biedrins has been pretty scrubby for a while now, but ONE block all week?  Come on now, Andris!  4 PPG?  40% FG?  What the hell happened to the guy from 2008?  He was 12/11/2 BPG back then.
  • Emeka Okafor, NOH, 3 games: Emeka probably did more harm than good for his owners last week.  He averaged just 7/7 on 45% FG and 30% FT.  No steals, no assists, one block a night… weak sauce.
  • Javale McGee, WAS, 3 games: The league’s fifth best shot blocker forgot to do his job.  Curious George swatted just two shots all week… and he didn’t do much else, either.  He scored nine points and grabbed eight boards, but bricked about half his freethrows on five attempts a game.
