CBA Recap, January 4th: Game-Winning Three Saves Guangsha

Guangsha 98, Shandong 97: Shandong’s Alan Anderson appeared to have scored a game-winning dunk with 1.7 seconds left, but Wilson Chandler was able to connect with Jin Lipeng on a cross-court inbound pass that led to a buzzer-beating three-pointer from the corner.  After Shandong fell behind by double digits in the early going they began a game-long comeback that didn’t result in a lead until that aforementioned Alan Anderson dunk.  Shandong made their first big run as Guangsha turned the ball over and failed to convert on easy opportunities throughout the third quarter.  Although they shot just over 50% from the floor and combined for 49 points, I didn’t think Wilson Chandler or Peter John Ramos played very well.  They both missed some easy ones and committed turnovers late in the game.  Chandler did come up big midway throught the fourth when he took it from a tie game to a five-point lead with consecutive buckets.  Alan Anderson led Shandong with 29.

Fujian 102, Zhejiang 78: I say it ever single time I write one of these things, but Zhejiang really needs to stop bringing JR off the bench.  Playing from behind isn’t something a team should try to be doing every single game, and that’s what it’s been like for Zhejiang.  JR did his best to bring them back with 35 points on 16 for 25, but he would’ve needed about 35 more to play hero in this game.  Will McDonald was a load in the paint with 37 points and 12 boards, and Anthony Roberson was excellent as well with 24/7/3.

Xinjiang 102, Bayi 83: Gani Lawal, a former Georgia Tech forward who played one NBA game with the Phoenix Suns, has signed on with Xinjiang to replace the ineffective Kenyon Martin.  In his second game with the Flying Tigers Lawal scored 38 points and grabbed 19 boards.  Xinjiang was in desperate need of some help after Martin’s flop and Mills’s injury, so Lawal’s play has been absolutely huge for them.  Wang Zhizhi led Bayi with 24.

Qindago 116, Jilin 90: Qindago got their fourth win in the last five as Lester Hudson missed out on a triple-double by just a single assist (30/10/9).  Qindago won the first quarter 40-17 and once again held Jilin under 20 points in the third quarter.  Jilin’s Cartier Martin scored 27 points on 9 of 11… his efficiency has been unbelievable at times.

Dongguan 108, Jiangsu 84: Shavlik Randolph and Josh Akognon scored 29 a piece and combined for 22 boards to help make Dongguan 11-8 on the season.  Jiangsu remains last in the league at 4-16.  Jackson Vroman had an unusually low-key game with 9 points and 9 boards on 4-10 from the floor.

Guangdong 112, Beijing 99: After trailing by double figures early in this battle for the top spot in the standings, Beijing bounced back and tied the game at 76 at the end of the third.  Guangdong made a big push with 4:30 to go when they made a 7-0 run kicked off by a pair of Aaron Brooks freethrows and capped off with a James Singleton bucket.  The Southern Tigers move back into first place at 15-4 with this big win.  Aaron Brooks scored 32 points and dished 8 assists as Stephon Marbury put up 35 and 9 of his own.  James Singleton’s 29/12 on 14 for 18 were huge for the Southern Tigers.

Liaoning 103, Tianjin 82: Whoa, David Harrison had a big game!  Too bad his 24 and 10 weren’t enough to get Tianjin a rare victory.  Josh Powell’s 19 and Rodney Carney’s 21 blazed the trail to victory for Liaoning.  Tianjin went just 3-18 from three while Liaoning went 15-28.

Shanghai 95, Foshan 88: Look at Mike Harris and the Shanghai Sharks getting their 5th win in a row!  Harris had 25 points and 14 boards on just 14 shots.  Some of the shooting lines these guys put up in China are absurd.  I guess it doesn’t say much for the level of defense being played, but any time a guy shoots something like 14 or 15 shots and makes 10 or more of ‘em it’s pretty impressive.
