CBA Recap, January 1st: Hudson Leads Qindago Past Guangsha

Qindago 93, Guangsha 81: Lester Hudson bounced back from his worst game of the season and scored 17 of his 37 in a first quarter that set the tone for the game.  Qindago was able to maintain their lead as Hudson sat out the duration of the second quarter, and when he came back in the third the advantage quickly ballooned to 17.  Qindago led by 20 midway through the third, and the closest thing to a run that Guangsha ever put together was 7-0 to start the fourth.  They were never able to get within single digits, though.  In addition to his 37 points Hudson contributed 8 rebounds and 12 assists.  He shot the ball well and essentially dominated the game.  Wilson Chandler scored 29, but he needed more help from Peter John Ramos, who wasn’t as effective as usual with just 16 points.  Qindago sent lots of help defenders at Ramos and already had him frustrated soon after he entered the game.

Fujian 119, Bayi 115: Anthony Roberson and Will McDonald combined for 69 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Sturgeons over the Rockets.  Former Dallas Maverick Wang ZhiZhi was Bayi’s leading scorer with 35 points on 6-8 from distance.  Bayi has now lost seven in a row.

Zhejiang 100, Dongguan 88: JR Smith had a pretty low-key game with 18 points, 9 boards, and 7 assists, but he drew a lot of attention that helped his teammates make big plays.  He also gave Zhejiang their first second-half lead with a Karl Malone “mailman” dunk in transition.  With about 5:30 left to play, Zhejiang held an 88-85 lead.  Tang Hai, who had a team-high 25 points, spotted up in the corner and drilled the biggest shot of the night (made it a two-possession game).  From this point on Dongguan was only able to score 3 points.  Tang threw down a big dunk to make it a 13-point game before JR put the exclaimation point on the victory with a behind-the-back pass to Josh Boone for yet another slam dunk.  This is a big win for Zhejiang as they led Dongguan by just a half game prior to the contest.

Guangdong 124, Jiangsu 96: Jackson Vroman and the Jiangsu Dragons had a little tougher go of things than they did against Liaoning last round.  Vroman, who was coming off of a 45-point game, was held to 17 points by James Singleton and company.  Singleton put up some of his finest numbers of the season in this one, scoring 18 points and grabbing 22 rebounds.  Zhu Fangyu led Guangdong in scoring with 26 points.  Aaron Brooks had 15, and Marcus “laptops” Williams had 20.

Tianjin 100, Jilin 96: Cartier Martin had one of his worst games of the season, scoring just 20 points on 28 shots in a disappointing loss.  Donnell Harney led Tianjin with 26 and 12.

Liaoning 111, Beijing 104: What has happened to Starbury’s Ducks?  After snapping their three-game losing streak just last game, they’ve lost another one.  Rodney Carney scored 29 for Liaoning, who hit 8 triples to Beijing’s 3 (Carney 5-10 from deep).  Randolph Morris scored a game-high 35 for Beijing, and Stephon Marbury put up 25/7/8.  I guess they needed more help from their teammates.  Once again, Beijing and Guangdong are tied for first place.

Shanghai 92, Shandong 75: Mike Harris made 15 of 18 shots as he scored 36 points to lead the Sharks to their 5th victory in a row.  They’re now above .500 for the first time this season at 9-8.  As usual, Shandong got an inefficient 25 points from Alan Anderson and a double-double (12/12) from Othello Hunter.

Xinjiang 100, Shanxi 94: Xinjiang’s streak of three straight losses has come to an end, but Patty Mills still isn’t playing.  Tang Zhengdong, who may or may not be named after the powdered breakfast drink, scored a team-high 29 points.  Marcus Williams had 29 of his own, and Charles Gaines had 34/16.
