Fantasy Studs & Duds Week Three

All rankings based on 9 categories (pts/reb/ast/stl/blk/3/fg%/ft%/to) and head-to-head format.

STUDS

Point Guards

  • Steve Nash, PHX, 3 games: Steve Nash was the the #1 player in fantasy basketball in week three.  He put up 21.7 points on 62.5% from the floor and dished out 12.7 assists a night while only averaging two turnovers.  His freethrow shooting was actually a little worse than usual, about 85%, but that’s still pretty damn good.  Overall he had a very efficient week with some big numbers in a few categories.  Steve’s scoring has been great so far this season, he’s up to 20 PPG now.  With the absense of Amare Stoudemire expect his scoring to remain a little higher than it’s been over the past few seasons.
  • John Wall, WAS, 3 games: John Wall cut the turnovers down and kept the rest of his numbers up in week three.  John averaged 16/5/10 with over four steals and 1.7 threes a night.  The great numbers have been there all season, but the fact that the turnovers were only two per game helped his ranking this week.  He finished second overall.
  • Russell Westbrook, OKC, 3 games: Russell continued to tear it up, check out these eye-popping digits: 28.7 points, nine assists, two steals, a block, 48% shooting from the floor, and 88% shooting from the line on 11 attempts a night.  He still doesn’t hit any threes, but with numbers like the ones he’s putting up this year, who cares?  Someone else can take care of the threes, Russell’s taking care of everything else.

Shooting Guards

  • Mike Dunleavy, IND, 3 games: Here’s a name that you would probably expect to see on the duds list.  Mike was a stud this week, though.  He averaged 22 points a night on damn near 60% from the floor with four triples per game.  So, does this continue?  Well, I don’t know.  Mike hadn’t been playing well at all up until about six days ago.  Since then he’s had three great games, but the word before those three games was that he’d likely be benched in favor of Brandon Rush in the near future.  I’m not sold on the guy based on one good week after multiple consecutive disapponting, injury-ridden, inconsistent seasons.
  • Mickael Pietrus, ORL, 2 games: Mickael Pietrus played in two games last week.  He took 18 shots, and he made 12 of them.  He took one shot that wasn’t a three, and he missed it.  The dude basically did for two games what every fantasy owner wishes all of their players could do for an entire season: he averaged 18 points per game while taking nothing but threes.  Mickael, keep this up and you’ll be a fantasy legend.
  • Manu Ginobili, SAS, 4 games: Manu had a four-game week, so his 21.8 points on 50% from the floor and 100% from the line on six attempts a night were huge.  His rebounds and assists were nothing special (3/3), but he did throw in 3.3 triples and 1.5 steals a game.

Small Forwards

  • Michael Beasley, MIN, 4 games: Super Cool padded his scoring average with a career high 42 against the Kings.  The problem with Beasley has always been that he doesn’t do much outside of scoring and a little rebounding.  In week three he was pretty decent in some other categories.  He made a three per game and got two steals a night to go along with his 29.8 points.  Don’t expect that stuff every week, though.  Beasley is still a rather one-dimsensional fantasy player.
  • Kevin Durant, OKC, 3 games: KD finally shot like KD for a week.  Durant has struggled in the FG% category early this season, but he shot a solid 48.4% in week three.  He averaged 29/6/3 with the 1/1 steal/block line, hit almost two threes a game, and made 95.8% of his freethrows.  It was a nice week for Kevin, hopefully his shot is here to stay.
  • Travis Outlaw, NJN, 3 games: Outlaw’s minutes went up during week three, and he took advantage.  Travis scored 17.3 a night on 52.5% from the floor with a couple threes a night.  He didn’t do much else, five boards a night is alright, but other than that pretty much nothing.  This is Travis Outlaw we’re talking about though, so 17.3 on high FG% with some boards and some threes is rather studly.  Don’t expect Travis to keep this up, his minutes were increased due to an injury to Terrence Williams, who should be back soon.

Power Forwards

  • Zach Randolph, MEM, 3 games: Zach is back!  He missed most of the first two weeks with an injury, but he’s been back on that 20/10 train ever since.  He had 20/10 twice in week three and 20/9 in the other game.  His averages came out looking like this: 22.3/13.3 on 63% FG with over a steal a game.  He turned the ball over just three times in three games.  He didn’t knock down his freethrows, but he didn’t take very many.  At this point you know what Z-Bo’s about, pencil him in for 20/10 on a nightly basis.
  • Paul Millsap, UTA, 4 games: Millsap’s 46 point explosion in Miami helped make him the 10th best player in fantasy basketball for week three.  Paul averaged 24.3 points a night on about 62% from the floor, and even knocked down three triples!  I feel bad for that guy who lost his matchup to the dude who had Millsap because of those three random triples.  That guy, if you’re out there reading this, hang in there.
  • Kevin Love, MIN, 4 games: Kevin Love recorded the first 30/30 game in the NBA in 28 years.  If he did nothing else all week that alone probably would’ve gotten him on the studs list.  He did do other stuff last week, though.  Other very good stuff.  Kevin had a 23/24 game against the Lakers and a 22/17 game in ATL as well.  The fourth game sucked, forget that one.  The guy averaged over 20/20 in a four game week.  When’s the last time someone did that?

Centers

  • Pau Gasol, LAL, 3 games: Pau Gasol averaged 21/15.7 with over a block and a steal for week three.  His season numbers are 23.2/12.4, so this really isn’t even anything special for him at this point.  The guy is having a great year, expect him to continue to be a beast.
  • Tyson Chandler, DAL, 3 games: Tyson had the three most productive games of the season last week.  These three games included two double-doubles and some pretty consistent production in just 27 minutes a game.  He averaged 11.3/11 on the week… pretty much the numbers that I feel like he should be able to do all the time.  I’m going to pretty much disregard this, Tyson has disappointed me way too many times in the past to excite me with one solid week.
  • Serge Ibaka, OKC, 3 games: Serge continued to swat shots like a madman in week three.  Ibaka blocked 3.7 shots per game, and threw in 12/6 on just under 54% from the floor.  Serge’s minutes are going to go back down now that Jeff Green is back from injury, so expect the numbers to fall, but he’s still worth having because he’s going to get his blocks.

DUDS

Point Guards

  • Jason Kidd, DAL, 3 games: Jason got his 10 assits,  5.3 boards, and two steals a night in week three, but check this out: he averaged 1.3 points a game on under 24% FG.  The dude was on the Reggie Evans starters-minutes-no-scoring train.  That’s all well and good for Reggie Evans, but he’s Jason Kidd, so that’s unacceptable.
  • Gilbert Arenas, WAS, 3 games: Agent 0 9 had a pretty poor week three averaging 13.3/4.7/3.7 on 32.6% from the floor in just 29 minutes a game.  He did finish the week off with a 30-point night in Chicago, the first really good game he’s had all season.  Maybe he can build on that, but I wouldn’t count on it.  I have no faith in the guy, I figure it’s just a matter of time before he does something stupid and ends up in the doghouse or something.
  • Chauncey Billups, DEN, 3 games: Chauncey’s terrible season rolls on: 12.7/2/3.7 on 40% FG with 3.3 TOs a game were the week three numbers.  Once again, the only thing he was able to do well was shoot freethrows.  He made all 12 of his attempts.  Chauncey’s having his worst season in a long time, it’s been three weeks now and there’s been no signs of improvement.  At 34 years old he is getting up there…  I wouldn’t say it’s panic time, but I’d be a little worried.  Three weeks is a pretty long slump.

Shooting Guards

  • Hedo Turkeyglue, PHX, 3 games: Not even Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns can make this dude look good.  He just doesn’t do anything anymore.  10.3/2.3/2.7 in 25 minutes a night was the line.  He did manage to hit 2.3 threes a night.  Way to go, Turk!  You’re awesome!  Just kidding, you’re a bum.
  • Brandon Roy, POR, 3 games: Brandon Roy’s knee is bothering him, and it shows in his minutes.  Roy was only able to eek out 26 minutes a night, although he did play 35 against OKC on the 12th.  The fact that his other two games weren’t close may have been another reason his minutes were low, but I’ve read that he’s probably going to miss time this week so his knee is certainly a concern.  Week three line: 12.3/2/1.3.
  • Jamal Crawford, ATL, 4 games:  Jamal Crawford scored 15+ seven times in the first ten games last season.  This season he’s only done it three times in ten games, and he didn’t do it at all in week three.  He played his usual 30 minutes a night, but he just didn’t really do anything… 11 ppg and absolutely nothing else.

Small Forwards

  • Thaddeus Young, PHI, 3 games: If you’re still hanging on to this dude consider making a drop.  Thad hasn’t played 30 minutes in a game all season long, and the most he played in one game in week three was 24 minutes.  Thad actually shot over 60% from the floor last week, but when a guy is only getting nine shots a game it doesn’t really matter how well he shoots… he’s probably not worth owning.  If you see his minutes go up check for him on the waiver wire.
  • Rashard Lewis, ORL, 4 games: ‘Shard averaged just 8.5/5.3 on 35% with pretty much nothing else in week three.  He only reached double figures in scoring once in four games, and he actually played one game where he didn’t attempt a single three.  That didn’t happen all of last season.  Rashard is having a terrible year so far, his averages are down big across the board.  Unfortunately for the Magic, his pay remains the same.
  • Andre Iguodala, PHI, 2 games: Iggy missed one of Philly’s games with an injury, and in the two that he did play in he went for just 28 minutes a night.  I figure he’s probably healthy, because he played about 38 minutes in one of the games, which was close, but just 19 in the next one, which was a blowout. Iggy won’t be averaging 11.5 PPG if he’s healthy and playing his usual minutes, so look for him to improve next week.

Power Forwards

  • Tim Duncan, SAS, 4 games: The Spurs won all their games last week, but Timmy D didn’t contribute much, at least not on the stat sheet.  The line: 8.3/6.5/2.3 on 34% FG and 69% FT.  He did block two shots a game…  but damn… 8/6 for Tim Duncan?  That just seems… wrong.  I’m going to chalk this up to a lack of minutes due to blowout victories.  Timmy averaged under 26 minutes a game as the Spurs played three bad teams and won each game by double digits.
  • Dirk Nowitzki, DAL, 3 games: Dirk Nowitzki didn’t hit a single three last week.  I’m not going to bother to look up the last time Dirk went a week without hitting a three because I figure it was a very long time ago.  The rest of the line wasn’t very Dirk-like either.  He scored just 17.7 points a night on 44% FG.
  • Elton Brand, PHI, 3 games: After two great weeks Elton finally tanked.  He put up just 11/7.3 with pretty much nothing else.  He only blocked one shot all week.  Like I said with Iguodala, Philly was involved in some blowouts, but Elton still played almost 30 minutes a night.  Keep an eye on him.

Centers

  • Brook Lopez, NJN, 3 games: Lopez continues to suck.  Nine games into the season he’s still yet to record a double-digit game on the boards.  What the hell is that all about?  Brook averaged just 14.3/6.3 on 40% FG on the week.  It’s been three weeks now, if this dude doesn’t get better soon you may want to look elsewhere for some C production.
  • Chris Bosh, MIA, 3 games: Bosh is still M.I.A. in MIA… yet another uneventful week for Chris as he continues to defer to LeBron and Wade.  The line: 14.3/7.3 with a solid FG% and nothing else.  If you used a high draft pick on Bosh, try to be patient I guess…  the guy’s value can’t possibly get any lower, he hasn’t had one good game all season.  He has to have a good game at some point, so wait until he has a few then shop him like crazy.
  • Anthony Randolph, NYK, 4 games: Randolph had a bit of hype coming into the season.  He’s a tall and talented dude playing for an uptempo team with a rather weak frontcourt.  Still, he’s been unable to get minutes since returning from injury on November 4th.  He had one game where he played 28 minutes, but he didn’t do much, and other than that there’s been essentially no time for him.  The Knicks have been terrible lately, so one would thing they would be open to trying some new things…  therefore, if Randolph doesn’t get a chance at some significant time very soon, I’d say it’s certainly time to give up on him.
