Lou Williams: The NBA’s Newest Rapper

Kobe, Shaq, Allen Iverson, Marquis Daniels, and others have all tested their skills on the mic rather unsuccessfully.  That didn’t deter Lou Williams…

I would actually call this surprisingly listenable.  Lou did two things right: first of all, he teamed up with someone who can actually rap.  Meek Mill, the other dude on the song above, is an up and coming artist from Philly who is down with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group and recently appeared on the cover of XXL magazine.  Here’s my favorite of his songs for those of you who are interested…

The second thing Williams did right was select a Lex Lugar track.  Lex is a young producer from Virginia who produced a variety of hits in 2010, including nearly everything put out by Waka Flocka Flame (most notably “Hard In Da Paint“) and the rest of Brick Squad.  The dude creates straight fire, basically.  It’s a lot harder to sound like sh!t when you’re rhyming (or in Waka Flocka’s case not necessarilly rhyming) over a Lex Lugar track.  I’m sure many of my readers will strongly disagree, but I can get down with a Lex/Brick Squad song.  For example…

As for Lou’s flow and lyrical ability… I’d say he’s above average for a ball player.  I don’t think I’d go out and pay 10 bucks for an album of his or anything like that, but he certainly didn’t make my ears bleed.  This line was clever…

“I’m three deep in that two seater you understandin’ my logic?”

As was this one…

“I’m selfish with my money guess you can call it ball hoggin’.”

He kind of falls off at the end though…

“Shittin’ on ‘em no toilet.”

Come on, Lou, the whole toilet/sh!t thing has been flipped so many ways by so many rappers… it’s tired.  Not only is it tired, it was never anything special in the first place.  I also got a little laugh out of this line…

“I’m ballin’ out I ain’t benchin’.”

Well, Lou, I’m looking at your game log… and I’m counting a total of zero starts in 60 games played.  Looks to me like you are in fact benchin’.
