Marc Gasol Blocks Eight Shots, Ties Franchise Record

Relative to the way they began the season, the Memphis Grizzlies are really struggling right now.  They’ve dropped four of their last six, with Friday’s defeat being one of their most frustrating thus far.  In an 86-84 loss to the Blazers, Mike Conley missed a point-blank layup that would’ve given the Grizzlies a one-point lead with just seven seconds to go.  It was Memphis’s ninth consecutive miss, and Rudy Gay’s last-ditch jumper would be number ten.  Ten straight misses to close out a two-point loss.  Pretty discouraging.

How ’bout Marc Gasol, though?  With his career-best eight blocked shots, the big Spaniard tied his brother Pau’s Grizzlies franchise record.  As cool as it as that two brothers are now officially tied for an NBA franchise record, this story gets even cooler.  At least I think it does.

Pau, you see, did not hold this record alone.  He shared it with none other than Stromile Swift, who swatted eight 76er shots on November 20th, 2003.  Swift added 12 points and 16 rebounds to his impressive block total, and I think it’s safe to assume he was much more spectacular in his setting of this record than either of the Gasol brothers were.

Thank you, Marc Gasol, for bringing about a Stromile Swift reference during an NBA basketball game.  Also, thank you for not surpassing his record.  He doesn’t have many.

nice but not impressive,at least when you consider the official nba record of 17 and the 26 blocked shots that wilt chamberlain had against the detroit pistons or the 23 blocked shots that wilt had against phoenix at the age of 32
