12/9/10: Rondo And KG Collaborate To Beat Philly.

It was a three-game Thursday night that was more exciting than it should’ve been.  Rajon Rondo and Kevin Garnett had to connect on an alley-oop layup with about a second remaining to get the Celtics past the Sixers in Philly.  Wait, the game was in Philly, you say?  Why are all the fans in the photo wearing green and celebrating with Garnett?  Well, that’s what happens when you’re 7-15.

Random Observations:

  • Highlight Recap: Thaddeus Young slams it hard with the laft handAndre Iguodala with a monster putback, which Kevin Harlan nearly ruins by making a strange noiseVC dunking like he was wearing a Raptors jerseyDevin Harris breaks Jason Kidd’s anklesDwight Howard blocks a three from Brandon Roy.
  • The Sixers were up two on the Cs with a minute left, but made a huge mistake and left Ray Allen completely unguarded.  Ray knocked down a three to give Boston a one point lead.  Andre Iguodala would get the Sixers the lead back with six seconds left, but once again, Philly made a mistake.  Thaddeus Young and Jrue Holiday switched on a pick and roll, creating a huge mismatch and allowing KG to easily finish an alley-oop from Rajon Rondo to win the game.  I understand why Philly would switch… there wasn’t much time left and they probably thought Rondo was going to have to shoot the ball.  Still, I’m going to call it a mistake, because forcing Rajon Rondo to make a jumper would’ve been a better strategy than allowing KG to shoot any kind of layup.  Boston gave Philly an opportunity to compete in this one by playing Ray Allen and KG just limited minutes and starting Semih Erden, and they did take advantage of that.  Seven of nine Sixers who played scored in double figures and they led much of they way, but as most bad teams struggle to do, they couldn’t seal the deal.
  • I had intended to make this post early this morning, but the 10 degree weather didn’t motivate me to get the hell up.  As chilly as it is up here in Maine, Orlando is even colder from three-point land right now.  The Magic went just 6-22 from distance (10-44 over the last two games) and failed to snap a two-game (now three-game) losing streak in Portland, even though they got a season-best 39 points from Dwight Howard.  Superman Jr. didn’t get much help from his buddies: the rest of the starters shot 10-37.  Andre Miller came out and played great in his first game following his suspension.  Dre had 22 points, seven boards, and eight assists.  Wes Matthews had another 20-point night, his third in a row.  I’d just like to mention that Dwight Howard looked excellent in this game.  He hit jumpshots, left-handed hooks, right-handed hooks, and even hit 13 of his 18 attempts from the line.  Marcus Camby could do nothing to slow him down, and even though Joel Przybilla bothered him more than Camby did, he certainly didn’t shut him down either.  Those are two very good defenders… to drop 39 on them is an impressive feat.
  • Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points and grabbed 10 boards while shooting 8-10 as the Mavs beat the Nets by 13.  Dirk has been lighting it up all season long… the guy is shooting 56% from the floor on the year.  Shawn Marion also went 8-10 last night on his way to 18 points.  The Mavs assisted on 31 of 41 buckets and knocked down 54.7% of their shots.  It wasn’t a good night for former Mavs: Avery Johnson took another L and Devin Harris left with an injury to his left shoulder.  Dallas’s win streak is now up to 11 games.

Quote of the Day: Jason Terry on Avery Johnson’s return to Dallas…

“I got to shake his hand and hug him before the game.”

Oh wow, aren’t you a lucky guy!
