CBA Recap, February 8th: Zhejiang Drops Big Game To Shanghai

Shanghai 87, Zhejiang 75: JR Smith’s Zhejiang Golden Bulls have dropped out of the playoff picture (for the moment, at least) with this big loss to Mike Harris and the Shanghai Sharks.  Shanghai and Zhejiang each stood at 15-13 coming into the game, tying them (along with Guangsha) for 7th place.  Guangsha was able to edge Bayi by a single point, so Shanghai’s victory left Zhejiang the odd man..er..team out.  The aforementioned Mike Harris put the final nail in Zhejiang’s coffin as he snatched up a rebound off of his own missed freethrow and dropped it in the bucket, making it a 12-point game with just a minute or so to go.  Harris had 31 points and 21 boards in the game, both team highs, while JR Smith led the Golden Bulls with 29.

Guangdong 126, Fujian 116: Aaron Brooks and James Singleton scored 25 a piece to help Guangdong make it a 12-game win streak.  Singleton added 14 boards, and the two of them made 19 of 29 combined shots.  Fujian was led by Anthony Roberson, who scored 45 in the loss.  They drop one spot, down to 6th in the standings.

Xinjiang 104, Liaoning 99: Tim Pickett’s 33 points, 11 boards, and 5 assists were all team highs, and they were good enough numbers to lead the Flying Tigers past a Liaoning team that has now lost five in a row.  Josh Powell seems to have showed up to play in this game… he had 22 points and 14 boards.  It was Rodney Carney who struggled mightily… he went 0-10 from three on his way to 8 points.  Xinjiang improves to 17-12 with the victory (their 5th in a row), moving them into 5th place.

Shandong 118, Beijing 112: Stephon Marbury went for 35 points on 12-22, but Beijing still dropped their second in a row.  It seems that Randolph Morris didn’t play today, and Shandong took advantage by winning the battle of the boards (43-34).  Othello Hunter had a team high of 9 rebounds to go along with 21 points.  Alan Anderson had a game-high 36 points on 5-5 from deep.

Qindago 115, Tianjin 102: Donnell Harvey is playing out of his mind right now.  He had 43 last round, and he dropped another 40 today.  He also had 13 rebounds, making it his 5th 30/10 in a row.  That being said, Tianjin still lost by 13.  Lester Hudson took a modest 7 three-pointers as he led the way with 34.

Guangsha 90, Bayi 89: Guangsha is lucky to have escaped with a one-point victory with Wilson Chandler contributing just 14 points on 14 shots.  Peter John Ramos was solid with 20 points and 10 boards, but Guangsha is going to need a lot more from both of these guys if they want to cement their playoff spot and go on to make any noise.  Currently, they’ve moved into 8th place.  They’ve got a big game on Friday morning against JR Smith and Zhejiang, who are sitting just one game below them in the 9th position.  Two former Denver Nuggets battling it out for the final playoff spot in the CBA… should be interesting.

Jilin 128, Shanxi 123: Shanxi had an excellent opportunity to beat a weak team and move into a tie with Dongguan (BYE) for the 3rd spot, but they were unable to contain a variety of Jilin players, including Cartier Martin, who dropped 28.  Jameel-Sharif Watkins also had 28, and two more Jilin players scored 20+.  Charles Gaines had a monster 33/18 double-double for Shanxi.  Marcus Williams scored a game high of 36.

Foshan 110, Jiangsu 108: It says 110-108, but then I click the box score and it appears that Foshan had 121.  I guess it doesn’t really matter… Foshan won, neither of these teams are making the playoffs, and Jackson Vroman had 30/11 in a loss.  Deal with it.
