POTD 1/14/12: Monta Ellis On Tyrus Thomas

Monta’s best dunk since Barbosa?  That’s a statement I’m making without too much consideration, but off the top of my head I’m failing to come up with a better one in between.  Check it out, keeping in mind that this posterization is nastier than it is spectacular.

Like I said, it’s not the most spectacular slam you’ve ever seen, but one of the nastier ones of the season, right?  I certainly think so.  Monta didn’t take off from a crazy distance, or contort his body, or get his elbow above the rim, but what he did do is dunk it with force despite a lot of body contact with an elite athlete and solid shot blocker in Tyrus Thomas.  He added a little style by briefly using his off hand to adjust the ball before packing it in Tyrus’s grill.  He really ripped the rim on his way down, too, making the dunk look much stronger than the average little-guy slam.  I love this dunk… one of the finest I’ve seen from Monta, who’s had his share.  I feel like some readers are going to think I’m overrating the hell out of it, but I’ve explained myself.  You are free to disagree.

Dunk rating on the Starbury Nastiness Scale:
