CBA Recap, December 30th: JR Smith & Zhejiang Upset Guangdong

Zhejiang 97, Guangdong 92: JR Smith and Aaron Brooks were quiet in the first half (combined for just one basket), but they’d come alive for an exciting finish.  I suppose it was really just JR who came alive as he scored all but 8 of his 27 in the second half.  Brooks never really got it going, finishing with just 20 points on 20 shots.  Josh Boone had a game-high 29… he and JR connected on multiple alley-oops down the stretch as Zhejiang turned it into a ten-point game with about half of the fourth quarter left to play.  Guangdong would make it a game again as James Singleton stuffed Boone on another lob attempt, leading to an Aaron Brooks and-one layup at the other end That made it 95-92, but Guangdong failed to score from that point on.

Dongguan 115, Bayi 96: Dongguan improves to 10-7 with this easy victory.  Shavlik Randolph scored 32 points as he and his squad shot well above 50 percent from the floor.  Zhang Bo, who shares his first (or maybe last, I think they do it backwards) name with every other Chinese player in the CBA, matched Randolph with 32 of his own.  Zhang connected on an impressive 7 of 11 three-point attempts.

Shandong 108, Foshan 100: Shandong got 35 inefficient but effective-enough points from Alan Anderson and a 14/10 double-double from Othello Hunter on their way to their seventh win of the season.  Foshan got 32 and 11 from Marcus Douthit, who did his scoring on just 19 shots.

Shanxi 128, Fujian 112: Anthony Roberson’s 39 points weren’t nearly enough to lift Fujian over Shanxi, who got 48 big ones from former Spur Marcus Williams.  Williams arguably posted the best line of the season by going 15 for 15 from the field and adding 6 boards and 4 assists.  Charles Gaines was pretty effective himself with 29 points on 19 shots.

Guangsha 115, Tianjin 85: Wilson Chandler only needed 24 minutes to rack up 22 points on one of the worst teams in China.  Former Pacer David Harrison played 31 minutes for Tianjin but could only come up with 16 and 6.  Harrison has got to the lamest former NBA player in China; the guy never puts up crazy numbers like all the others.

Beijing 104, Jilin 98: Beijing has finally snapped their losing streak (lasted 3 games) and re-taken the lead in the standings.  Stephon Marbury led the way with 31/5/10, and Randolph Morris did his part by scoring 22 points and grabbing 10 boards.  Cartier Martin had 22/8 for Jilin.

Jiangsu 122, Liaoning 118: Finally, Jackson Vroman’s beastly statistics have translated into a Jiangsu victory!  On this morning, Vroman went extra-beast-mode as he scored 45 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.  Rodney Carney and Josh Powell combined to score 70, but Vroman’s dominance was just too much.  Maybe if Marcus Williams gave Vroman some help they’d win more often.  M-Will is scoring just 10.8 PPG over his last five games, which has caused me to reconsider what I said about David Harrison.

Shanghai 69, Qindago 63: This wasn’t Lester Hudson’s kind of game.  His 15 points and 2-15 three-point shooting represent his worst performance of the season in each category.  Damn, 2-15… that’s probably not going to help him make it back to the league.  CBA fun fact: Lester Hudson has attempted 222 threes this season, an average of 13 a game.  He’s also attempted 286 twos, making it an average of just under 30 total shots per night… about three more than Kobe took in ’05/06.
