CBA Recap, December 14th: Lester Hudson Beats Zhejiang At The Buzzer

Qindago 100, Zhejiang 99: Despite Qindago’s last-place ranking, I figured this would be a good one.  A showdown of the CBA’s most potent offensive weapons?  It was a must-see.  JR’s been ripping the league to shreds lately, but I knew Lester Hudson would be up to the task–whether or not the rest of his team would be was the part that remained to be seen.  Turns out they were.

JR got off to a start so hot I thought this might be the game were he goes for 60 or 70.  He’d hit 5 of 5 shots for 12 of Zhejiang’s 18 early points before he finally misfired.  Meanwhile, Lester Hudson helped keep the game close by doing a little of everything.  He made some impressive passes early on as he pretty much initiated absolutely everything for Qindago.  His solid play early is the main reason why Qindago survived JR’s outburst and went to the second quarter with a 29-25 lead.

The second quarter was all Zhejiang.  They scored at will in the paint and JR continued to roll.  He had 26 at the half while Hudson was stuck on 15.  JR played the entire first half, though, while Lester did not.  Qindago fell further behind when their star player was on the bench and trailed 65-51 at the half.  They were only able to knock two points off of that lead by the time the final period rolled around, but they were about to catch a break: JR Smith went cold as a block of ice in the fourth.  Fortunately for Zhejiang Josh Boone was there to collect some of his misses and stick them in the basket.  Boone took it from a four-point to a six-point lead on three seperate occasions down the stretch.  Qindago would keep chipping away, though, and finally, with 3:30 left to play, Lester Hudson nailed a three to give them a 94-93 lead.  Zhejiang would eventually end up back in the lead by one, 99-98.  At this point it was last shot time.  Lester Hudson waited for the clock to wind down, took his man off the dribble, pulled up at the top of the key, and nailed the game-winner with just 2.9 seconds on the clock.  JR Smith missed on a hail-mary three-pointer and Josh Boone’s tip in was ruled to have come too late.

Hudson finished with 34 points, 6 boards, and 6 assists on 13-31 in Qindago’s third win of the season.  The shooting number looks ugly, but he’s the only guy on the whole team that can create anything at all.  I’ll stop ragging on him so hard for shooting so much because he really has no choice.  Jr Smith ended up with 39… almost none of them came in the fourth.  Of his 9 missed triples I’d say at least 5 of them had to have come consecutively down the stretch.  Li Gen was big for Qindago with 32 points on 5-5 from deep.  He was the guy knocking down shots to get Hudson the assists.

Shanxi 108, Foshan 100: Charles Gaines scored 38 big ones while grabbing 11 boards to help Shanxi climb to 6-3 on the season.  Marcus Williams pitched in 27/8/6, and three other Shanxi players also scored in double figures.  Four Foshan players scored 18 or more, but that didn’t keep them from dropping to 3-7.  The replacement of Gerald Green with Marcus Haislip isn’t really paying any dividends.

Shandong 112, Bayi 87: FINALLY, Shandong has won a game!  They’d lost seven in a row coming into this one, which doesn’t appear to have been much of a contest.  Alan Anderson dropped 29 in 30 minutes, and guess who had a double-double?  Othello Hunter, of course!

Guangsha 70, Fujian 56: Could this game really have finished up at 70-56?  Sina Sports says so, so I guess I’ll go with it.  Wilson Chandler put up a major dud with 14 points on 0-8 from three (he did have 18 boards).  Fortunately for him Peter John Ramos showed up and did 22/11.

Jilin 104, Dongguan 100: Dongguan’s six-game win streak comes to an end as Cartier Martin hangs 31 on their head.  Josh Akognon (29), Shavlik Randolph (28), and Zhang Kai (22) scored all but 21 of Dongguan’s points.  That’s an unusual lack of balance even on CBA standards.

Guangdong 106, Liaoning 87: Guangdong is all alone in second place after this easy victory over Josh Powell and friends.  Powell was the game’s leading scorer with 25, but he needed to tack on about 25 more for a W.  Aaron Brooks led six Guangdong players who scored in double figures with 21.

Jiangsu 107, Tianjin 104: Jiangsu has replaced the injured Dan Gadzuric with Jackson Vroman, and not only did he fill in well today, he led the winning attack with 23 points and 15 boards.  Donnell Harvey was the game’s leading scorer with 34 (had 23 boards too), but his efforts didn’t keep Tianjin from falling to 2-9, putting them all alone in last place.

Shanghai 88, Xinjiang 84: The Kenyon Martin expiriment continues to go… not very well.  He scored 20 today, but Xinjiang lost to 15th-place Shanghai.  Mike Harris had 24/8 for the Sharks.  K-Mart has simply not been very productive in the CBA.  I’m starting to wonder if he’ll be let go at some point.  I have no reason to believe that he will… just speculating.

Just want to throw in a non-CBA-related note: I don’t plan to do any more of the daily signings/trades/rumors posts because most of the big names have already been snatched up.  When the note-worthy guys who are still available get taken I will make individual posts about it.  Monitoring the news and constantly updating is very time consuming, and now that most of the important moves are out of the way I want to make time to discuss other things.  I suggest following @NBA247OFFICIAL on Twitter for NBA news.
