Celtics Acquire Jeff Green In Last-Second Trade

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics have pulled off highway robbery and sent overrated schlub (yeah you heard me!) Kendrick Perkins to OKC for Jeff Green.  Via Woj’s Twitter…

Boston has agreed to send Kendrick Perkins to OKC for package that includes Jeff Green, sources tell Y!

I just heard on NBAtv that the deal also includes Nenad Krstic and Nate Robinson.  As you probably gathered from the opening sentence of the post, I love this deal for the Celtics.  Kendrick Perkins is basically good at being big.  Okay, I’m hating a bit here.  To be fair, he’s probably one of the better post defenders in the league.  Even without him, though, the Celtics were an elite defensive team, and as long as he can stay healthy, I still like what Shaq brings to the Celtics.  He doesn’t have the lateral movement of Perkins at this point in his career, making him a defensive liability when it comes to pick and roll scenarios, but he’s far better than Perkins on offense and his insane size still gives him the ability to clog the paint like few others… I’ll take that tradeoff.  Playing with Kendrick Perkins can be like playing four on five offensively.  He isn’t a particularly good finisher around the rim, he has no jumper, and he doesn’t have a polished post move in his arsenal.

Jeff Green is a guy who can provide some much-needed offense off of Boston’s bench and fill that hole at backup SF.  The Cs often struggle to put the ball in the basket when their second unit enters the game.  Green and Krstic should both help to solve that problem.  Krstic isn’t a beast by any stretch of the imagination, but he can stand at the top of the key and knock the jumper down with regularity.  As for Nate Robinson… I feel like he didn’t really fit in Boston, so no major loss there.  Nate Rob is a guy who would be better off in a less structured offense.  He could get some burn with the Thunder as they’re a bit weak in the backup PG department.

To put an even more positive spin on this from a Cs perspective, consider this: Boston could very well have lost Perkins for nothing this summer.  He’s going to be an unrestricted free agent, and he’s probably looking to cash in.  I still feel like his career has been made by KG, PP, RA, and RR.  He’s one of those dudes who I feel will fade into obscurity if he ever ends up with a bad team.  I can even see him falling off with OKC… they’re certainly not an elite defensive team as of right now, and I’m not convinced that Kendrick Perkins alone can do a whole helluva lot to change that.

UPDATE: The Cs pulled off a second buzzer-beating deal as well.  Don’t get too excited, it involves nothing but dust collectors and draft picks.  Here are the details courtesy of the Cleveland Plain Dealer…

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio — The Cavaliers completed one more deal before the 3 p.m. trade deadline, acquiring center Semih Erden and forward Luke Harangody from Boston in exchange for a 2013 second-round draft pick, according to a league source.

UPDATE #2: This trade was likely made so that Boston can sign Troy Murphy, who is expected to be bought out by the Warriors.  They could also use the extra space to add Rasheed Wallace.  Rumor has it that ‘Sheed wants to come back for one more playoff run.
