Fantasy Studs & Duds Week 12

All rankings based on 9 categories (pts/reb/ast/stl/blk/3/fg%/ft%/to) and head-to-head format.

STUDS

Point Guards

  • Monta Ellis, GSW, 2 games: I hate to include players who played just two games, but he was the top ranked player in fantasy basketball, so I figured it was a must to include the Moped.  Ellis did 34 PPG on 58% FG and 92% FT with three triples and two steals a night.  He somehow managed to play 80 minutes without grabbing a single rebound.
  • Derrick Rose, CHI, 4 games: D-Rose’s value was in the scoring numbers.  He poured in 27 a night for four games while knocking down almost 97 percent of his freethrows (on 7.3 attempts per game).  He didn’t shoot exceptionally well (44.7%), and his assists were a little slack (6.8), but 5.3 boards, 1.8 blocks, and 1.3 threes make up for that.
  • Beno Udrih, SAC, 4 games: Beno probably had the best week of his life.  He ranked 12th overall and 4th amongst PGs with averages of 20 points, 3.8 boards, 4.8 dimes, 1.8 steals, and 1.3 bombs.  Beno Udrih with 20 PPG for four games?  Shout out to my Canadian pal Skywalker, the fantasy Gods hate you.

Shooting Guards

  • Nick Young, WAS, 3 games: Bean Burrito gave opponents their fill with a whopping 29 PPG on an impressive 52.7 percent shooting.  He threw in four triples a night, made almost 90 percent of his 19 FTs on the week, and even contributed 4.7 boards and 2.7 assists.  The 2.7 assists had me doing a double take.  The guy has never shown much interest in passing the rock… he averages less than one helper per game for his career.
  • Aaron Afflolo, DEN, 4 games: Afflolo’s known for his defense, but he switched up his role last week and put the ball in the basket at an astounding 19.5 PPG clip.  He shot over 60 percent from the field and knocked down almost two longballs a night.  Carmelo didn’t play particularly well last week, so Afflolo was forced to pick up some slack.  Keep an eye on this guy is Melo is dealt.
  • Eric Gordon, LAC, 3 games: Blake Griffin and the Lakers are the big stories in Los Angeles, but Eric Gordon quietly continues to have a breakout season.  Last week’s 28 PPG on 60 percent shooting is excellent production.  Throw in 6.8 dishes, 2.3 threes, and two steals and you’ve got the 11th best line of the week.

Small Forwards

  • CJ Miles, UTA, 2 games: Another two-gamer, but when a borderline free agent type does 22 PPG (with three threes) I feel the need to throw his name out there.  On top of the scoring, he chipped in defensively with a block and a half per game.  He only turned the ball over once all week.
  • Jason Richardson, ORL, 3 games: J-Rich was dialed in from long distance.  He knocked down twelves threes on the week while he scored 20 a night.  He also gave you over four boards and a steal per game.
  • JR Smith, DEN, 4 games: JR’s spent much of the season in George Karl’s doghouse.  He only played 24 minutes per game, but he made them count to the tune of 17/5/3 on 60% FG/86% FT.  He knocked down plenty of threes, of course (2.5 a game), and contributed five steals on the week.

Power Forwards

  • Kevin Love, MIN, 3 games: 22/15/3 with 2.3 threes and a steal on 50% FG/75% FT.  Kevin Love continues to make me want to slap myself silly as punishment for neglecting to select him in four different drafts.
  • Ryan Anderson, ORL, 3 games: 15/8 with over three triples per game from a guy who probably could’ve been added off the free agent list?  You’ll take that.  A block a game was also a nice bonus… he isn’t known for his athleticism.
  • Blake Griffin, LAC, 3 games: Blake put up 23/14/4 on 48% FG.  He bricked a lot of freethrows and didn’t produce much outside of the three main categories, but the guy is on my team and I was more than satisfied.

Centers

  • Emeka Okafor, NOH, 3 games: Your tolerance of poor freethrowing skyrockets when a guy is doing 15/13 with a block per game.  He wasn’t able to hit from the line, but he didn’t have any trouble scoring over the defense.  ’Meka dunked his way to a 73.9 shooting percentage.
  • Dwight Howard, ORL, 3 games: Howard shockingly knocked down 72 percent of the 36 freethrows he took last week as he scored 28 a game on 60% FG along with 15.7 boards, 1.7 swats, and 1.3 swipes.  Imagine if the guy was able to consistently shoot 72 percent from the stripe… his scoring would go up over a point per game based on my math, and that isn’t even a perfect indicator because improved shooting would discourage defenders from hacking so much.
  • Zach Randolph, MEM, 3 games: Z-Bo primarilly plays the four, but he does have eligibility at the five spot.  I had to fit him in somewhere, and there were three other guys I also wanted to include at the PF spot.  Anyway, Randolph did 24/17 on 50 percent from the floor and 80 percent from the line.  He didn’t do much else, but that’s plenty.

DUDS

Point Guards

  • Jason Kidd, DAL, 3 games: I finally unloaded this dud-list regular for DJ Augustin and LeAndro Barbosa.  Barbs is hurt, but with Kidd’s 7.7/4.7 on 33% FG from last week, I have no regrets.  Good riddance you crusty old has been.
  • Chauncey Billups, DEN, 4 games: Chauncey’s been much better lately after a very slow start, but he had a crappy week.  Mr. Brick Shot dished a solid eight assists a game, but scored just 10.3 points on 40% FG.  That’s not gonna cut it.
  • Mo Williams, CLE, 3 games: Five points and four assists on 23 percent from the floor?  Yikes.  Life without LeBron has been tough for Williams, but I’m glad he thought better of calling it quits.  Hang in there and pray for a trade, Mo!

Shooting Guards

  • Andre Iguodala, PHI, 2 games: His production already had a low ceiling due to a two-game week.  He decided to impose further limitations on his numbers by sucking.  Eight points, five boards, and seven assists on 35 percent shooting was the line.
  • Jason Terry, DAL, 3 games: Jason Kidd wasn’t the only mason tossing bricks in Texas last week.  One of the Jet’s engines must’ve failed, he played just 26 minutes a game as he scored 11 PPG on 33 percent from the floor.
  • OJ Mayo, MEM, 3 games: OJ’s had a rough season.  He’s been knocked the f@ck out by Tony Allen, demoted to the bench, and involved in a variety of trade rumors.  Things didn’t get any better last week as he shot 18.5 percent from the floor on nine shots a game.  That’s all you need to know.

Small Forwards

  • Hedo Turkoglu, ORL, 3 games: Turkeyglue shot plenty of bricks from both the field (29%) and the stripe (64%) as he scored just eight PPG.  He didn’t really contribute in any category… I guess one three per is acceptable, but it isn’t anything to jump up and down about either… and other than that he was totally useless.
  • Linas Kleiza, TOR, 3 games: Linas played 31 minutes a night, but he simply didn’t make things happen.  His production has dropped off this month, even though he’s still starting and seeing plenty of time on the court.  Ten PPG and three RPG was about all he was good for last week.
  • Wilson Chandler, NYK, 3 games: What happened Will?  13/5 without a single block?  That’s not the Ill Will I’ve come to know and love this season.

Power Forwards

  • Robin Lopez, PHX, 3 games: Brook isn’t the only Lopez twin with a severe case of the Bargnani Flu.  In 20 minutes a game Robin was only able to collect an average of two rebounds.  Come on man, you’re seven feet tall!
  • Apparently it was a strong week for PFs.  I’m not seeing anyone else that really belongs here.  I guess I could’ve skipped this section, but I wanted to mention Rolo’s suckiness and I already had three centers.

Centers

  • Roy Hibbert, IND, 3 games: Roy’s recent struggles continue.  Dr. Hibbert played just 20 MPG last week and was limited to six points and seven boards on 32 percent shooting.  He did manage to swat two shots a game.
  • DeMarcus Cousins, SAC, 4 games: Thirty-two percent shooting and almost four turnovers a night make his 12 and 8 look quite unappealing.  Poor freethrowing (57%) doesn’t help his cause either.
  • Spencer Hawes, PHI, 2 games: Looks like Spencer’s solid month of December may have been fools gold.  He’s been terrible in January, and last week was no different.  The guy didn’t make a single three, block a single shot, or steal a single ball.  He did score four points and grab 3.5 boards a game.  Woohoo!
